18 Aug In Depth on Interior Designers
Let me first start by introducing myself if you haven’t visited my about page. My name is Kirsten and I went to school for Interior Design for three solid years. I did a co-op in four and eight month terms. Like any passion, you go at it full force, little sleep but keep pushing. While many think we simply pick paint colours; that is just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s break it down shall we?
Interior Designers study commercial and residential design. They examine problem analysis, concept development, lighting, drawings and specifications and design technology. As well as mentioned above; space planning, colour theory and presentation techniques they are also taught historical preservation and sustainable design. What was once a three year program, is now a four year degree program.

Interior designers are creative, imaginative and artistic professionals who are also disciplined, organized and skilled in business. Combining knowledge with aesthetic vision, interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are functional, support the health and safety of the users, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive. Designs must satisfy the needs and resources of the client, adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. “
In my schooling, we had to participate in a project for the London Home Builder’s Association with retrofitting a home in London while keeping our updates green and barrier free (wheelchair accessible).
We also had to take a historically registered building in London and modify it in some way. I chose to update the Idlewyld Inn (built in 1878) by adding a day spa and yoga retreat. See below from 1910!
But back on topic!
Designers focus on the functional aesthetic solutions to interior spaces analyzing the needs and budget as they prepare and present conceptual solutions and manage implementation. They work in corporate, healthcare, hospitality, retail, residential, public and institutional spaces. You cannot call yourself an Interior Designer unless you have met ARIDO’s qualification standards on Ontario. There are severe fines for false labeling.
Whomever you choose to go with (nudge nudge), I advise you to do your research first. What is it that you are looking for? Are you renovating? Do you need to move electrical or plumbing?
Ask the right questions: What is your education? What is your track record for practical experience?
As well, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Cheapest is not always the best plan. For example, let’s say you go with the cheapest plumber. Now what if this plumber cuts corners to save money and you end up with a leak. You will most likely call someone else to fix their mistake and end up spending more in the long run. Now I’m not saying go with the most expensive either, just know what you are getting.
